This collection consists primarily of letters, 1863-1865, from Robert Augustus Stiles to his family concerning religious sentiments and his service in the 1st Company of Richmond Howitzers at the battles of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, and Cold Harbor. Also in the collection are extracts from Stiles' memoir, Four Years Under Marse Robert (New York, 1903), and notes, n.d., on prison reform by his daughter, Lelia Caperton Stiles (1875-1895).
